sangit om

This is a difficult question. Do you really know who you are? I don’t even know who I am and now I should tell you who SANGIT OM is? But at least, looking at his picture, you can get an idea how he looks:

Sangit Om

He might look a bit different now, since this photograph is a little outdated, but he still loves to play the same floot. It’s an Indian Bamboo Flute, also called BANSURI. He uses  Bamboo Flutes on most of his recordings, but also wooden flutes, tin whistles and even a clay flute. He also plays piano. He received his first piano lessons when  he was five years old, back in 1959 and later he learned to play violin. He studied composition first with Hans Vogt at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts and later with Ladislav Kupkovic at the University of Music and Drama Hannover. In 1979 he passed the state examination with distinction and attained his master degree. After his studies he worked as a jazz pianist, composer, theater- and studio musician.

After a while he felt this was too boring, so he started to travel and this way he learned a lot more about music. In India he found a teacher who showed him how to play the bamboo flute and how difficult it is, to play Indian music. By the way: ”SANGIT OM” is an ancient Indian mantra which means ”music is the sound of inner silence”. His real name is Stefan Petersilge, decide yourself which name you like better!

sangit (sanskrit) = music  om (sanskrit) = sound of silence

Since 2002 Stefan Petersilge lives in Greece, where he works as a musician and music producer, as well as a workshops leader on music and dance. As a composer he naturally merged all his musical influences to find his own unique style. Although he doesn’t like the current system of musical genres (for him music is just music, sometimes good, sometimes bad) it was obvious, that his music could best be described as NEW AGE MUSIC, with a touch of WORLD MUSIC and JAZZ.

In 1988, he released his first CD at Nightingale Records, where also the first recordings of Anugama, Karunesh and Kamal appeared. This was followed by three more CDs for Nightingale Records. He later moved to other music labels. He published six more CDs for the Dutch label OREADE and 3 CDs for EMI under the label "New Spirit". He also served as producer and musician on numerous publications by other artists.

His first album is called “True Stories”. He insisted, that everything on this CD has a true story behind it, or even is a true story in itself. But when I asked him about the stories, he never would tell me any. He  said: “just  listen to the music, there you can hear them!” When you listen to his beautiful music, you will maybe hear them and you might even get a slight idea, who SANGIT OM is...
